The Evolution of Rebel 101 - from TGR to a game you've never played before!
๐ ๏ธ From Tanks Gone Rogue to Rebel 101
What started as a simple tank shooter in a dystopian wasteland has transformed into something far deeper and more immersive. Tanks Gone Rogue laid the foundation, fast-paced combat, stylized visuals, and a rogue machine uprising, but it lacked the soul and narrative I envisioned.
Thatโs when Rebel 101 was born: not just a tank, but a character with purpose, memory, and rebellion coded into its circuits.

๐จ Visual Overhaul
One of the biggest changes is the game's visual identity. The flat-shaded look was reworked to feel more grounded but still stylized - closer to cell shaded backgrounds fused with gritty wasteland vibes.
-
Improved lighting and shadows
-
Upgraded particle effects (powered by my own EffectBlocks pack)
-
More detailed environments that blend storytelling into the terrain

๐ ๏ธ Dynamic Main Menu & Hangar System
The main menu is no longer static - it's part of the story.
-
You can now launch into a hangar where Rebel 101 can be upgraded.
-
Upgrades, customization, and narrative interactions all happen here.
-
The hangar evolves based on your progress and uplinks.

๐ง Lore & Backstory Integration
Early versions had almost no lore. Now, Rebel 101 has a deeply embedded story:
-
Rebel 101 is a rogue AI tank with glimpses of human memories.
-
Each uplink reveals parts of a shattered world and a forgotten war.
-
The Exon threat and what humanity did to itself is slowly uncovered as you progress.

๐ The Uplinks System
This system ties together gameplay and narrative.
๐ New Environments & Worldbuilding
The barren wasteland was just the start.
-
Explore silos, fallen cities, irradiated zones, and outposts.
-
Hidden terminals, ruins, and signals contribute to a layered experience.

๐ What Stayed, What Changed
Still Here:
-
Fast-paced tank combat
-
Permadeath tension (though toned to be more accessible)
-
Stylized effects and gameplay-first design
Changed or Improved:
-
A central narrative with progression
-
Highly polished main menu and UX
-
Visual consistency and atmosphere
-
Sound design and radio voice lines for upgrades and lore
?! Why I Rebuilt It
Tanks Gone Rogue was functional, but Rebel 101 is personal.
I wanted to create something that feels alive - where gameplay and story are inseparable. A solo project like this demands a lot, but it also gives the freedom to tell stories in your own way.
๐ What's Next?
-
More zones and secrets are planned (lots of stuff going inside my head!).
-
Continued polish based on feedback.
๐ฌ Support the Game
Rebel 101 is 100% free. No ads. No microtransactions.
